A Historical Continuity: From Paul Viaud’s Legacy to the University of Xaragua
The history of the University of Xaragua is deeply rooted in a long-standing commitment to education and intellectual development in the South. Long before the founding of this institution, Paul Viaud, grandfather of the university’s founder, played a crucial role in supporting education by housing teachers from Port-au-Prince in his real estate complex in Miragoâne. These educators, who came to share their knowledge with the region, found refuge in this space, making it a true hub of learning.
Today, this very same complex serves as the main campus of the University of Xaragua, continuing its historical mission with an even greater scope. This is not merely a coincidence but a deliberate continuation of a legacy, highlighting the importance of knowledge and education in shaping the future of Xaragua.
The University of Xaragua proudly carries on this heritage, transforming the former residence for educators into a center for intellectual and political training, dedicated to shaping the elite of the South. What was once a sanctuary for teachers bringing education to Miragoâne is now a stronghold of knowledge and intellectual sovereignty for Xaragua.
Through this transition, we honor Paul Viaud’s vision by advancing his dedication to education, independence, and academic excellence in the South.
University of Xaragua – Educate, Structure, Defend.
The Paul Viaud Campus is named in honor of Paul Viaud, the grandfather of the university's founder. A man of Taíno descent, Paul Viaud was a prominent businessman, landowner, and real estate entrepreneur in Miragoâne. His vision and success laid the foundation for the legacy we continue today.
The university stands on the lands and properties he carefully built and preserved. His estate in downtown Miragoâne now serves as the main campus of the Université du Xaragua, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations of leaders, scholars, and visionaries.
At the Paul Viaud Campus, we honor not only a great entrepreneur but also a guardian of history and identity. His contributions to the region live on through education, knowledge, and leadership development for the people of Xaragua.
